Is Canyon Lake Closed? Drawdown Status, Timeline and Where to Ride Instead
Tonto National Forest closed the lake, every boat ramp and the shoreline sites on September 8, 2026 for SRP's dam-safety drawdown. What is off-limits, what the agencies have published, and two ways to keep your day.
Canyon Lake Status: Closed to All Public Access
A Tonto National Forest public-safety closure order has been in effect since 6 a.m. on September 8, 2026. It covers the lake, the lakebed, both boat launches, the day-use sites and the campground.

- Drawdown scheduled from

Where the project stands in mid-October
SRP breaks the work into three phases of roughly:
| Phase | About how long |
|---|---|
| Lower the water about 54 feet | 4 weeks, from September 16 |
| Inspect and maintain the submerged parts of Mormon Flat and Horse Mesa dams and the channel below Horse Mesa | 8 weeks |
| Refill the lake from upstream reservoirs | 4 weeks |
By early October, local news reported the lake was down about 54 feet, with a large part of the lakebed exposed and debris being documented and removed, and said the lake would stay closed until early next year. SRP has said the schedule could stretch if inspections find more work. The SRP project page and the Forest Service alert are the places to watch for any change.
Canyon Lake is closed, and it is going to stay that way for months. If you had a fall day on the water planned there, the fix is simpler than it sounds: our rentals are picked up in Apache Junction and towed by you, so the closure changes your destination, not your booking. This page tracks what the agencies have actually published, and it gets updated when they publish something new.
Three Answers Before You Load the Trailer
Is Canyon Lake closed right now?
Yes.
Closed to the public since September 8, 2026, under a Tonto National Forest closure order.
Can I launch a boat, jet ski or kayak?
No.
The Laguna and Palo Verde launches are closed, and SRP says no boats are permitted on the lake during the drawdown.
Is there a confirmed reopening date?
No.
SRP describes the project as approximately 16 weeks and says it could run longer. Nobody has published a reopening date.
The Drawdown Timeline, and Why Nobody Has a Reopening Date
SRP breaks the project into three stages after the public closure. Every duration below is SRP's own approximation, not a promise.
- In effect since Sept 8, 2026Lake closed to the publicTonto National Forest closes the lake, all boat ramps and access points to prepare for the drawdown.
- From Sept 16 · about 4 weeksWater comes downSRP plans to lower the lake by roughly 54 feet. SRP says the water moves downstream through Saguaro Lake to Valley customers, and none is wasted.
- About 8 weeksInspection and maintenanceCrews are scheduled to work on the normally submerged parts of Mormon Flat and Horse Mesa dams and the river channel below Horse Mesa.
- About 4 weeksRefillSRP plans to bring the lake back to normal level with water released from Apache and Roosevelt lakes upstream.
Do not plan around a reopening date yet. SRP says that if inspections turn up more work, the timeline may be extended and reopening delayed. The Forest Service closure order is written to run through February 28, 2027 at 6 p.m. unless it is rescinded sooner. Until an agency announces a date, Canyon Lake is expected to stay closed into late 2026 or early 2027. We will update this page when that changes.
What Is Closed, What Is Open, and Who Says So
"The lake is closed" covers more ground than most people expect. The closure order draws a line around the water, the exposed lakebed and the recreation sites along State Route 88. Here is each piece, with the source we checked on September 17, 2026.
| Place | Status | What the source says |
|---|---|---|
| Canyon Lake water and boat launchesLaguna and Palo Verde boating sites | Closed | Closed recreation sites in the forest order. SRP: boats will not be permitted on the lake during the drawdown. |
| Shoreline and exposed lakebed | Closed | SRP: access is prohibited by boat, motorized vehicle or on foot because of unstable shorelines, deep mud pools and sudden drop-offs. Tonto National Forest and the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office enforce the closure. |
| Day-use sitesAcacia and Boulder | Closed | Named as closed recreation sites in the forest order. |
| Tortilla Campground | Closed | Named as a closed recreation site in the forest order. |
| Canyon Lake Marina site | Closed site | Named as a closed recreation site in the forest order. The marina is independently operated, and SRP directs questions about its plans to the marina operator. |
| Forest Road 80North from State Route 88 | Closed | Closed in the forest order because of heavy construction traffic for the SRP work near Horse Mesa Dam. |
| State Route 88 (Apache Trail) | Open | The forest order and SRP both say SR 88 remains open. ADOT lists no vehicle restrictions, but notes the unpaved stretch past Fish Creek Vista is steep, narrow and weather-dependent. Check az511.gov before you drive it. |
| Boulder Canyon Trail 103 | Open | Listed as an open boundary trail in the forest order. The Boulder recreation site next to it is closed, so confirm parking with the Mesa Ranger District before you go. |
| Saguaro Lake | Open | Not part of the closure. Tonto National Forest's Saguaro Lake page showed "Site Open" when we checked. Check it again the day you go. |
| Bulldog Canyon OHV area | Check first | The closure order does not name Bulldog Canyon. Look at the Tonto National Forest alerts page for fire restrictions or other orders before you ride. |
Walking or driving onto the dry lakebed is not a gray area. The forest order makes entering the closed area a federal misdemeanor, punishable by a fine of up to $5,000 for an individual, up to six months in jail, or both.
Why SRP Is Lowering Canyon Lake 54 Feet
This is scheduled maintenance, not a drought story. SRP and the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation lower Canyon Lake about once every 20 years so crews can reach dam equipment that sits underwater the rest of the time. The same work was done in 2007, and before that in 1987.
SRP says it runs the project in the fall so its hydropower plants are fully available through the summer peak, and so the work wraps up before late-January rains raise the flood risk. Water deliveries to Valley customers continue throughout.
Keep Your Arizona Lake Day: Pick Water or Dirt
Two options from the same Apache Junction pickup. One keeps you on the water. The other does not need a lake at all.
Water: Saguaro Lake
- Not part of the Canyon Lake closure.
- About 30 minutes from our shop to Saguaro Lake Marina.
- Jet ski and wakeboat rentals, all towed by you.
Dirt: Bulldog Canyon by UTV
- No lake, no boat ramp, no watercraft sticker.
- Buy your Tonto National Forest OHV Permit on Recreation.gov before you ride.
- Fall is the comfortable season for desert riding.
Saguaro Lake: Same Rentals, About a 30-Minute Tow
Saguaro Lake is a separate reservoir behind Stewart Mountain Dam, downstream of Canyon Lake, and it is not part of the closure. We are the closest jet ski rental shop to it. From our lot at 724 E Scenic St, Saguaro Lake Marina is about 30 minutes away.
It also suits most groups well. Saguaro is wider and more open than Canyon's narrow corridor, which suits jet ski runs, tubing and wakesurfing. Before you go, plan for three things:
- Passes
- Boating on Tonto National Forest lakes takes a Tonto Daily Pass plus a watercraft sticker, or a Tonto Discovery Pass. Buy it before you reach the ramp. Our Tonto Pass guide walks through it.
- Capacity
- The Forest Service says Saguaro reaches boating capacity early on most weekends and holidays from April through October, and turns away vehicles towing boats once boat parking fills.
- Lake rules
- Travel is counter-clockwise, the bay in front of Butcher Jones and Saguaro del Norte is closed to motorized craft, and the east end is no-wake. Watch the buoys.
Plan a Saguaro Lake rental, or compare the two lakes in Canyon Lake vs. Saguaro Lake.
Bulldog Canyon by UTV: A Fall Day That Needs No Lake
If the closure has you rethinking the whole plan, a side-by-side is the option that has nothing to do with water levels. Our Can-Am Maverick X3 Turbo DS goes out with four helmets and goggles and iPad trail maps. The Bulldog Canyon permit is not part of the rental, and it is the piece most people do not know they need. Buy your Tonto National Forest OHV Permit on Recreation.gov before you ride.
- Who can rent
- Renters must be 25 or older.
- Before you ride
- Check the Tonto National Forest alerts page for fire restrictions and new orders the morning of your ride. Desert weather and washes change fast after rain.
- Stay out of the lakebed
- The exposed Canyon Lake lakebed is closed to vehicles and to people on foot. A UTV does not change that.
Start with Bulldog Canyon riding information, then explore UTV rentals.
Your rental is not tied to a lake. You pick it up in Apache Junction and choose where to tow it, so a Canyon Lake closure changes your drive, not your day.
Wave & RidgeHow Pickup Works When Your Lake Changes
We do not deliver and we do not launch for you. That is exactly why a closed lake does not cancel your plans.
- Book your rental, then pick it up at 724 E Scenic St, Apache Junction. Arrive one hour before your start time for hookup, life-jacket fitting and your walk-through.
- Bring a vehicle that can tow. If it has a receiver but no ball mount, we rent a hitch for $20. Renting a U-Haul truck to tow with? We comp $20 of it on 4-hour and 8-hour rentals. Mileage is not covered.
- Tow to the lake you chose, launch it yourself, and ride. All safety gear is included.
- Return by your scheduled time. There is a one-hour grace period after that.

Canyon Lake Closure FAQ
Is Canyon Lake currently closed to visitors?
Yes. Tonto National Forest closed Canyon Lake to the public on September 8, 2026. The closure order covers the lake, the lakebed, the Laguna and Palo Verde boat launches, the Acacia and Boulder day-use sites, the Canyon Lake Marina site and Tortilla Campground.
What is the difference between the closure date and the drawdown start?
They are eight days apart. Tonto National Forest closed public access on September 8, 2026 to prepare. SRP scheduled the drawdown itself, lowering the lake about 54 feet, to begin on September 16, 2026. SRP's "approximately 16 weeks" counts from September 16, not from September 8.
Can I launch a boat or use shoreline access during the project?
No. SRP says boats will not be permitted on the lake during the drawdown, and access to the exposed lakebed is prohibited by boat, motorized vehicle or on foot. Entering the closed area violates a federal forest order.
Has an official reopening date been announced?
No. SRP describes the project as approximately 16 weeks from September 16, 2026 and says the timeline could be extended if inspections find more work. The Forest Service closure order runs through February 28, 2027 unless it is rescinded sooner. Canyon Lake is expected to stay closed into late 2026 or early 2027.
Is Saguaro Lake part of this project?
No. Saguaro Lake is not part of the closure. SRP says water released from Canyon Lake passes through Saguaro Lake on its way downstream. Check the Tonto National Forest Saguaro Lake page for current conditions before you head out.
What must I check before planning a UTV outing?
Check the Tonto National Forest alerts page for fire restrictions and closure orders, confirm the weather, and stay out of the closed Canyon Lake area, including the dry lakebed. Our UTV rental includes helmets, goggles and trail maps. The Bulldog Canyon permit is not part of the rental. Buy your Tonto National Forest OHV Permit on Recreation.gov before you ride. Renters must be 25 or older.
Where do I pick up a rental, and what transport do I need?
Pickup is at 724 E Scenic St, Apache Junction, AZ 85119. We do not deliver. You need a vehicle that can tow the rental to the lake. If it has a receiver but no ball mount, we rent a hitch for $20, and we comp $20 of a U-Haul truck rental on 4-hour and 8-hour rentals.
Where are current booking terms and availability shown?
Rates are on our pricing page, live availability is in the booking calendar, and cancellation terms are shown at checkout before you pay. If you would rather talk it through, use the Call button or the contact page.
When does the Canyon Lake closure end?
The Forest Service order runs through February 28, 2027 unless it is lifted sooner. SRP's own estimate is about 16 weeks of work from September 16, 2026, including about four weeks to refill, and it could run longer.
How far down is Canyon Lake?
SRP planned to lower it about 54 feet, and news reports in early October said it had reached that level.
Is the Apache Trail closed because of Canyon Lake?
No. SR 88 stays open. Check road conditions before you drive the unpaved stretch farther east.
Can I walk on the dry Canyon Lake lakebed?
No. The exposed lakebed is closed to people on foot and to vehicles under the forest order.
